Abstract

In three-phase active filtering, the voltage inverter is the key for successful mitigation of harmonic components. Dealing with medium and high voltage applications, multilevel inverters are more suitable. The presented proposal allows to analyse the performance of three-phase active filters composed by single-phase 5-Level H-bridge voltage Modular Mutilevel Inverters and comparate them with those that use single-phase 5-Level H-bridge voltage Neutral Point Clamped inverters. Furthermore, the developed control system includes a strategy to balance the twelve capacitors voltages of the three single-phase modular multilevel inverters. The results show the effectiveness of this strategy, as well as its filtering capacity, with the possibility of adjusting the control parameters to obtain a similar quality to that obtained with neutral point clamped filters.
