Abstract

This study analyzes in detail the sizing of the battery bank for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) aimed at the application of peak shaving at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). Sizing a battery bank is a complex task that involves considering several variables, such as volume, bus voltage, energy storage index, cost, and associated losses. The viability of the BESS depends directly on the number of days during the year in which the system can supply the University's consumption during peak hours. For this purpose, six energy bands were established, each representing the percentage of business days in the year in which the battery bank can provide enough energy to meet consumption during peak hours. The study examines how some criteria impact the choice of the battery bank, considering different operational scenarios throughout the year. The results show that there are significant variations in the criteria analyzed for each scenario. These data highlight the importance of carefully balancing the variables to optimize both the efficiency and costs of the system.
