Abstract

A new energy transition has been taking place in the world with a focus on decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization; and renewable energy sources are protagonists in this changing scenario. However, despite their many advantages, these energy sources also have their weaknesses, which have been the subject of current research, so that they can be mitigated. According to the literature review prepared, in much of the research carried out with the aim of overcoming this challenge, energy storage systems are the solution with the greatest potential for reducing the disadvantages that accompany renewable generation. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimization methodology for determining the locational value of energy storage systems (ESS), in electrical distribution networks, considering loss rates and voltage violation reduction. The methodology was applied by allocating battery energy storage systems (BESS), in two distribution circuits, IEEE 13 Bars and EPRI's CKT5, in five different BESS capacity scenarios. Next, the validation of this methodology is presented by comparing its results with an already consolidated meta-heuristic optimization, the Genetic Algorithm (GA).
