Abstract

In small-signal stability studies, the presence of low-frequency oscillation modes with low damping rates can compromise the operating performance of power systems. Central damping controllers using measurements from Synchronized Phasor Measurement Units have proven to be effective in improving damping rates of oscillation modes. In this type of controller, time delays must be considered and they are usually considered harmful in the literature. In this research, an evaluation of the design of central damping controllers subject to different time delays is carried out with the aim of evaluating whether time delay limits can be considered as design variables and thus beneficial for improving the performance of the closed-loop control loop system. Case studies were conducted on the IEEE 68-bus test system through modal analyzes and time domain analyzes with the application of a contingency.
