Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of smart inverter, specifically fixed power factor (FPF), volt-var (VV), and volt-watt (VW) control functions, on the maximum hosting capacity (MCH) of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The idea is to explicitly incorporate a detailed model of PV systems into a power flow problem, using the full Newton approach. This modeling is integrated with a deterministic algorithm to obtain the MCH. Computational simulations carried out on a distribution system detail the impacts of each smart function on MCH and on the behavior of electrical losses as the penetration of PV resources grows.
