Abstract

The Brazilian electricity grid has been facing problems with the evolution of electricity consumption and the increased insertion of renewable generation. Maintaining the quality of the power supplied has become a challenge and grid support solutions need to be considered to maintain stability and security standards. Problems with voltage variations, caused by factors such as changes in demand and the high penetration of renewable generation, have resulted in the need for reactive compensation to maintain adequate voltage levels. Among the known solutions for this purpose, distributed generation (DG) has shown itself to be an agent with a high capacity to provide this type of support to the electricity grid. It is important to note that the high number of DGs in the electricity system has caused stability problems. However, it can be used to implement reactive compensation through photovoltaic inverters. In this sense, this work aims to present the implementation of photovoltaic distributed generation as a proposal for providing support services to the electricity grid and to validate the impact that this solution can have on the current needs of the Brazilian electricity system through tests.
