Abstract

In this study, the focus is on investigating potential faults in the excitation system of a brushless synchronous machine, specifically targeting the rotary rectifier bridge and how to detect them. The rectifier typically consists of diodes that can fail either short-circuited or open-circuited. The fault detection method proposed in this work is based on dynamic phasor analysis that allows determining the expected harmonic components in the field voltage of the exciter. Simulations were conducted using MATLAB/SIMULINK, with experimental validation performed on a laboratory setup, yielding promising results in detecting faults in the rotary rectifier by observing the harmonic content of the main exciter field voltage.
