Abstract

Operation of photovoltaic generators with power factor close to the unit value can provide a greater reduction in energy losses in the electrical grid due to the injection of reactive power into the grid, but it impacts the generator's economic viability studies due to the reduction in active power generation, as photovoltaic generator owners generally operate their inverters with unity power factor. This paper aims to present a study on the remuneration by the utility for the provision of services by a photovoltaic generator that chooses to operate its inverters outside the unity power factor. Distribution networks were used for tests and the analysis of results suggests a locational aspect as determinant for economic viability, due to the fact that it presents positive and negative results depending on the insertion bus in the distribution network.
