Abstract

The IEC 61499 standard offers valuable features for Industry 4.0 (I4.0), such as interoperability, portability, distributed processing, and support for service orientation, and for this reason, it has been widely used in scientific works. However, its adoption in the industry is still small, partly due to demand and partly due to the conservative nature of this environment. Although IEC 61131 is still predominant, understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each in the context of I4.0 is an important topic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of IEC 61499 for process control using microservices in the context of I4.0. A case study involving the implementation of a microservices orchestrator for controlling a pilot plant using the Eclipse 4diac framework and OPC UA communication is presented. The results demonstrated that IEC 61499 was as effective as IEC 61131 and offered ease of communication and integration with microservices, as well as enabling new functionalities such as distributed processing. This contribution highlights its relevance and potential for the new paradigms of I4.0.
