Abstract

This work studies the technical feasibility of installing a STATCOM in a steel industry with electric furnaces. These furnaces, as they are non-linear loads, cause several power quality problems. Due to its advantages, the STATCOM using the Delta CHB converter was the compensator considered most suitable for this application. Validations were carried out in both simulation and experiment of the control and strategies addressed to correct the power factor of the presented system. The results obtained in simulation indicated a reduction in THD of 5% in current in the high-voltage line and 3% in current in the medium-voltage line.
