Abstract

The implementation of micro-phasor measurement units (uPMUs) is becoming increasingly common in distribution utilities, aiming to improve network monitoring and reliability. The high installation cost makes it unfeasible to deploy many these devices. Hence, this work introduces a novel approach for optimal uPMU placement, based on the Variable Neighborhood Search metaheuristic and the resolution of a fault location algorithm. This method contributes to reducing maintenance crews travel time and, consequently, system restoration time. The proposed method was validated on a real-world system with 962 buses owned by an Ecuadorian utility. The obtained results were satisfactory, as the deployment of only two uPMUs resulted in a reduction of 24,93% in energy not supplied and 25,58% in the SAIDI reliability index.
