Abstract

This work is motivated by the high penetration of renewable sources, coming from wind and photovoltaic power plants. In this context, power quality problems become increasingly important at the distribution and transmission systems, characterized by the intermittency in energy generation. In this context, the STATCOM can contribute to voltage regulation and increased low-voltage ride-through. An extension of this concept is the ES-STATCOM, which includes energy storage systems in its topologies, enabling the exchange of active power with the grid. This work investigates the control of an ES-STATCOM based on cascaded multilevel converter. The control scheme is evaluated through simulation in the PLECS software. This work also includes experimental results in a reduced-scale test bench.
