Abstract

This work presents the identification and control of a laboratory scale reverse osmosis desalination plant. Given the nonlinear characteristics of the system, modeling and control were based on the approach of linear systems with varying parameters (LPV). The variable to be controlled is the inlet pressure to the OR membranes and the actuation is performed on a brackish water pressurization pump. As a scheduling variable, the opening of a brackish water feedback valve was adopted, adopting three operating points of the plant: closed valve (0% of opening), semi-open valve (50% of opening) and open valve (100% of opening). The synthesis of an LPV controller to control the inlet pressure to the membrane assembly for different valve opening conditions is also presented. The model identified with real data showed excellent performance in capturing the non-linear dynamics of the system. Moreover, the preliminary control results were satisfactory at simulation level.
