Abstract

This paper presents a technique based on homotopy to determine the solution to the the ill-conditioned large-scale power flow problem (PFP). The homotopy-based method is used to determine the PFP solution, starting from an initial estimate of the voltage type flat start, which also coincides with the solution of the initial point of the homotopy trajectory. For this purpose, a dummy network is fitted to the initial step of the homotopy path and eliminated at the end. At this endpoint, the solution matches the expected result for the PFP solution. Only the Newton-Raphson (NR) method is used along the homotopy trajectory. However, when this method is used without the homotopy process and three other tested techniques, convergence fails for most investigated test systems, including a system with 70 thousand buses.
