Abstract

In this work, we address the problem of supervisory control tolerant to intermittent faults in manufacturing systems modeled as discrete event systems (DES). Two fault tolerance approaches were applied to a case study developed on a virtual plant using Factory IO software: active approach and fault-hiding. In both cases, a diagnoser automaton was used to detect fault occurrences. Modular supervisors were designed based on the supervisory control theory of DES, and the fault-tolerant control structure was implemented in a PLC, controlling the virtual plant via the OPC communication protocol. Different strategies for implementing the fault-tolerant control structure are proposed and applied to the case study, resulting in the proper functioning of the plant, even with the intermittent occurrence of faults.
