Abstract

With the massive integration of variable renewable energy sources into current electricity systems, uncertainties and variability in their planning and operation are also increased. Due to their stochastic generation characteristic, these sources directly impact the dynamic behavior of the system, especially in the spatial characteristics of system frequency. In this study, the impacts of the location of stochastic generation variations from renewable sources are investigated. Two metrics are used to assess which system locations are more robust to variations from stochastic generation: (i) nodal inertia and (ii) disturbance propagation. Based on Monte Carlo simulations conducted on the IEEE 68-bus system and the evaluation of the proposed metrics, it is possible to identify the operational characteristics of the system that are beneficial for mitigating local frequency variations and their impacts throughout the system.
