Abstract

With the modernization of power grids, there is a growing tendency to utilize Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices, including Thyristor Controlled Series Compensators (TCSCs), to enhance transmission system capabilities. Such components must be included in real-time monitoring tools like the State Estimator (SE), allowing it to describe the network behaviour properly. While previous works have successfully performed state estimation incorporating TCSCs, they have focused on a single operational point and lacked proper stochastic analysis. This study explores the challenges of implementing TCSCS in SE and shows the performance of such applications facing random measurement noise. It explores the dependence on the initial guess and the possibility of numerical instability. Proposed solutions aim to improve such aspects. Simulation results on the IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 118 bus test systems validate the efficacy of the proposed approaches.
