Abstract
Power transformers are key equipment in an electric power system, and any failure might lead to power outages and financial losses to consumers and/or power utilities. Typically, aluminum and copper are used in the windings and although there is a verification regarding the low frequency behavior, little has been investigated regarding the winding behavior in a wider frequency band. Wideband tests are key to assessing and investigating possible issues internal to the transformer. This work proposes to investigate this aspect considering five types of medium size transformer ranging from 2 to 3 MVA. It also presents a comparison of a rational approximation of transformer windings which can then be used to evaluate terminal voltages and the impact due to high frequency harmonics in the transformer.
