Abstract

The distance relay is responsible for ensuring the protection and reliability of an electrical system. Some failures may occur due to inaccuracies in the relay setting whether line parameters are not computed in their entirety. Usually, the literature does not discuss the influence of weather conditions on cable temperature, which may change the impedance of a line. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate how electrical current, ambient temperature, wind speed and direction, and line azimuth angle directly affect distance relay adjustment. The modeling has been performed in Simulink, comparing the results with a relay without the proper correction. The results figure out possible errors in the operation and unwanted trips.
