AbstractThis paper presents a methodology to optimize reinforcements in transmission systems considering high wind power penetration represented by generation scenarios. The proposed methodology minimizes the total costs of the investments and guarantees a viable operation of the system. The increase in the capacity of the transmission lines, provided by the application of reinforcements in the appropriate places, allows a greater absorption of wind energy from the system, being able to take advantage of the benefits of renewables. The formulation considers an optimal active power flow and the relationship between the susceptance and the power capacity of transmission lines. The proposed methodology is solved with the linear programming technique. The IEEE 24 bus system is used to show the main concepts discussed in this paper.
