This work proposes a new method for obtaining equipment ranking lists, which can be used in state enumeration algorithms to evaluate the reliability of generation and transmission (G&T) systems. The proposed approach is based on the variance reduction technique named Importance Sampling (IS). Concepts from IS, a tool aimed at sampling processes, such as Monte Carlo simulation, are used to rank the most relevant equipment in a G&T system. The proposed tool is applied to a modified version of the 1979 IEEE-RTS test system and the obtained results are discussed.
