Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases represent a large portion of the main cause of death in Brazil. In severe cardiovascular dysfunctions, a good treatment is using mechanical pumps called ventricular assist devices (VADs), which are designed to extend the patient's life perspective. This work proposes to use computer simulation for modeling a VAD coupled to an adult human cardiovascular system model, under the influence of a control system that changes the ejection instant, designed to improve the physiological response of patients. As a starting point, techniques available in the literature, which have fixed parameters, were analyzed under changing the values of these measures. Performance indexes based on the error signal were used to compare the original techniques and after modifications. Finally, the computational simulation results were analyzed the discovered solutions, finding the ideal parameters from the minimization of the error signal.
